The Welsh Assembly Government has programmed a 2 stage implementation of ETP. The first phase, which has been broadly implemented, was to bring pharmacy IT in Wales in line with minimum standards for computer hardware, support and network connectivity, anti-virus, off-site data backup and NHS mail.
Phase 2 of ETP in Wales involves prescription data being encoded on the prescription form as a 2 dimensional barcode. Prescriptions are scanned with a special 2-D barcode scanner and the encoded prescription information interpreted by the pharmacy PMR software for processing. This service does require a smartcard and the paper form (WP10) continues to be the legal entity.
Rx Systems has received authority to deploy this service from the Welsh Assembly Government and all Rx Systems ProScript® customers in Wales are able to place an order for the service.
